QUARANTENA
2011 / 2020
Mandated isolation to stop the spread of foreign disease has been around for centuries. Following the Black Plague, Venice began holding newcomers for forty days, or a quarantena. In March of 2020, as I watched scenes of COVID-19 devastating Italy, I revisited photos I shot in Venice in the summer of 2011, reading the images in the context of a modern pandemic.
